Hundreds of runners were showered in multi-coloured paint as Wales’ brightest fun run returned to Tredegar on Saturday.

Raising money for life-limited children and young people and their families at the Tŷ Hafan children’s hospice, the 5km Rainbow Run transformed Parc Bryn Bach into a riot of colour for the second year running, aiming to smash its £30,000 target.

Parc Bryn Bach team members Jan and Kim helped motivate the runners with their upbeat warm up. Nation Radio presenters Carl and Rachel were on hand to gee up the crowd before speaking to parent Amie Sainsbury about her experiences of being supported by Tŷ Hafan.

Amie’s four-year-old son Callum has a life-limiting condition called Ohtahara Syndrome.

Callum was born by Caesarean Section on 18 May 2012. When he was five weeks old, he started fitting. Eventually he was having at least 19 fits a day and was hospitalised for nearly four months.

It took almost a year before he was diagnosed with Ohtahara Syndrome. Callum has since been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and scoliosis – curvature of the spine. He can't walk, talk or even smile.

His mum Amie said:  “Callum is such a pleasant little boy who we love to bits. We wouldn’t change him for the world.

“Tŷ Hafan has been my rock. They help us as a family and make us feel so welcome when we visit.

“When the nurses look after Callum, it gives us time to spend time with our daughter, Kelcea. They have helped us so much and we can’t thank them enough.”

Mair Kinsey, Head of Major Giving at Tŷ Hafan, said: “By taking part in our Rainbow Run events, you are helping families like Callum’s make the most of the precious time they have left together, as your valued sponsorship allows us to continue offering care and support across Wales.

”Thanks to all who took part and to the four paint stations sponsors, Atal UK, Alun Griffiths Civil Engineering and Construction, Colin Laver Heating and Tai Calon. Thank you also to 9 bar and Welsh Hills Bakery for providing the finish line treats for the participants, and to Princes Gate for donating bottled water for the participants.”
