It's been another successful year for Tŷ Hafan at the Cardiff Half Marathon, with nearly 100 runners taking on the iconic course in what is now Wales' largest mass participation event.

There are many highlights along the route, but a firm favourite for our runners is the cheer station located outside the Tŷ Hafan shop on Albany Road. It’s quickly gaining a reputation for being the largest and nosiest cheer point along the course, manned by an army of our amazing volunteers who come out to show their support despite road closures and potential downpours. Even runners from other charities turn their heads as we spur them on.

2018 was our biggest cheer station to date and our volunteers were joined by South Wales' largest community samba band, Samba Galez.

Cathryn Scott, who runs the Cardiff Mummy Says blog, said: “This year’s Cardiff Half was my first ever half marathon and the longest I had ever run. I was really nervous beforehand but the support along the route was incredible and helped me run faster than I ever thought possible.

“The cheer station outside the Tŷ Hafan shop, and the atmosphere all along on Albany Road, really helped my motivation, especially as by that point my legs were getting tired. I could hear the band playing and see all the green Tŷ Hafan t-shirts from quite a distance away and I could feel myself speeding up because I couldn’t wait to see them all. The music from the band was so uplifting and all the volunteers started clapping and cheering me on as soon as they saw me in my Tŷ Hafan vest. They made me feel really proud to be a part of the Tŷ Hafan team.

“I had a few high fives and lots of cheers - I ran past with my arms in the air, cheering, and felt so inspired. Having met lots of Tŷ Hafan runners before the race and hearing their experiences, this was another reminder of just why I was running and the difference we are all making to the families supported by Tŷ Hafan.”

After the race, it was great to get as many of the runners as possible to join up again, this time to replenish the carbohydrates they’d lost during the run and enjoy a pizza together.

The whole day was fantastic from start to finish. So much time and effort goes into running a half marathon, the challenge is so much more than the day itself. We couldn’t be more proud having so many amazing supporters taking on this event for Tŷ Hafan and each and every one of you is a superstar.

Another huge thank you must go to everyone who came out to support at this year's event, you really are the extra milers!
